Is It Not a Little Soon for a Hiatus?

Well, it’s been six days since I got back from Mexico. And of course Thursday and Friday I was itching to get back on the mats.

No, seriously, I was literally itching. And still am.

See, I was unfortunate enough to have an allergic reaction to something in the water down in the tropics. My legs are covered to the knee in an unsightly red rash. My lower back wasn’t to be left out, so that now at any given time I am likely to be contorted with one hand reaching to my lower back while the other scratches a leg or two. I’ve seen my doctor, and it should be gone within two weeks, but in the meantime there is naught to do but wait it out.

This does, however, shove a rod in the cogs of some of my plans. I am hoping to attend the 2011 Grapplers Quest U.S. National Grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships (yeesh, what a mouthful!) on June 18th. With less than a month left, will I have enough time to make sure I’m in shape for a tourney?

Yes, I know. Losing is learning. I have no problem with that. But I am also not a fan of hopeless causes, and I’d rather not spend the slightly more than modest sum of money required to register if I have no hope of winning.

So, we’ll see how I feel over the coming weeks. If I can make it to the competition, fantastic. If not – well, it’s not exactly likely this is the last BJJ competition ever. Unless those preaching of the Rapture were early by about a month…
